Shelf styling …. If you’re anything like us, you LOVE displaying your favorite things in your home and might even like to redecorate and refresh every once in a while.

We’re sharing some tried and true ways to update your shelves, giving them a fresh look and making them shine.
Even if you’re a rookie, you can transform your shelves into a beautiful display of your photos, flowers, accessories and whatever you love to show off!
Here are a few quick and easy ways you can style your shelves … and best of all, you don’t have to spend a fortune. Sometimes it takes just rotating items in and around your home to create pleasant vignettes. Shopping within your home is sometimes more fun than actually shopping at an actual store!
But if you feel compelled to shop at a brick and mortar store, we find it best to mix your objects with old and new, as another way to create visual interest, and a one-of-a-kind look.
Whatever you decide to do, here are some tips to keep in mind:
- TEXTURE: Mix different textures, like smooth and porous, shiny and matte
- GREENERY: Plants add height and texture to shelves
- ARTWORK: Lean artwork on shelves to create a gallery wall effect
- VARY HEIGHTS: Vary the height of objects on opposite sides of the shelf to lead the eye around the space
- ARRANGE ACCESSORIES: Alternate stacking books horizontally and vertically
- HAVE EMPTY SPACES: Leave some space around objects and don’t fill every inch of the shelf
- ODD NUMBERS: Group items in odd numbers helps move the eye around
- OVERLAP OBJECTS: Overlapping objects creates a grouping instead of a lineup
- TRIANGES: Think in triangles, arranging objects from high, medium, and low
- OLD AND NEW: Mixing old and new creates visual interest
- SINGLE ITEM: A single item can make a statement itself
Another way we especially love to freshen bookshelves, besides freshening the accessories, is to add a pop of color to the backs of the bookcases. This can be done either with paint or removable wallpaper. There are a myriad of colors, textures, and prints to select from, and can easily be coordinated with your existing palette. You can go as bold or conservative as you want. Best of all, it’s an easy update that doesn’t break the bank.
